Sister Mary Nadine Casey, CIJ Award

Sheba Thomas is humbled and honored to receive the Sister Nadine Casey, CIJ Award. Sheba started her nursing career at Saint Francis Hospital 17 years ago, after graduating with a BSN degree from New York Institute of Technology. Sheba realized she had a passion for precepting and mentoring students and newly hired nurses. After completing her MSN degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Long Island University, Sheba transferred to Mercy Medical Center as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and helped develop the Nursing Education Department. Throughout her years at Mercy Medical Center, Sheba was promoted to the Director of Nursing Education and Research. Sheba completed her Doctorate of Nurse Practice Degree from the University of Massachusetts in 2012, and focused on areas of staff education and evidence-based care for patients with indwelling urinary catheters.

Sheba demonstrates her passion for Nursing by working closely with a dynamic Nursing Education Team, who inspires her every day to do better. Together they serve as mentors to the staff and are always there to offer a helping hand. Sheba promotes professional development to her team and staff. The Nursing Education team has presented at many local and national conferences. Sheba collaborates with the local Nursing Schools, and facilitates student practicum and capstone experiences. Sheba also was the Nursing Department Lead for Mercy Medical Center’s successful Electronic Medical Record (Epic) implementation in 2013, alongside her mentor Kathleen Kennedy, AVP of Operations.

Sheba is known for her warm smile and willingness to help others. Sheba promotes patient-centered care, as she collaborates with staff in decision making. Sheba actively participates in Catholic Health Services and Mercy Medical Center Committees and continues to serve as a lead on Epic related projects. Sheba is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

Sheba is married to her best friend, Gibi Philip for 13 years and is blessed with two beautiful children, Kristen Priya and Michael Thomas, who were both born at Mercy Medical Center, and cared for by our wonderful staff. Sheba is grateful for her loving family, especially her parents, for their endless support and guidance.
